It's been a very long time since she's visited the Nexus, too long really. "This is probably the most trite question that could ever be posed today, but what are you most thankful for?" Ellie has some answers of her own, ranging from serious to snarky.

--- the United States government averted the Fiscal Cliff crisis by taking more money out of every single American's paycheck, continually from this day forward, while keeping the Bush tax cuts and excluding the rich people from paying anymore money than they ever did before.

Does that seem okay to everybody?

questions in the mist
I saw the Disney/Pixar movie Bolt a long time ago. There's a character in it named Blake but I can't remember who he was. Looked it up online but every search just says there's a Blake in the film without saying who it is, what he does.

Who is Blake?

Desk
Clark's only half-concentrating on where he's going as he enters the Nexus today, scribbling on a small notepad in his hand as he goes. He looks up and blinks, only mildly surprised to find himself here instead of at his desk at the Daily Planet.

"Deadlines... a fun challenge, or a rush to get everything done in time?"

Imperious
For those who were here last time, the young man in the expensive suit seems much less tense than he was before. He's tapping on a handheld touchscreen device as he enters the Nexus, then casually stows it in his pocket.

"It's my duty to plan a memorial for my late father. I do not wish to spend a great deal of money on it, but it still must look good for the inevitable media circus. I would be open to any suggestions for designs or ceremonies that might be appropriate."

Sceptical of you all
It’s been a while since Telrim’s had time for anything but business. But there must have been a lull back home, because once again there’s a Controller in the Nexus, quietly watching the people around her. As always the Yeerk is privately sizing them up – hosts, threats, interesting specimens - but her eyes follow the human-looking ones in particular.

She lifts her voice to ask clearly, “How much stock do you place in rumour?”

Funeral
Clark rarely looks as tired as he does now. Not a physical exhaustion but a mental and emotional one. And usually there's very few reasons for that.

He's quiet for a long few moments. Then he looks up, face carefully blank. "How do you honor a fallen friend?"

He hesitates, and then adds, "And how would you deal with having been the one to send him to his death?"

circling
There's a shark in the Nexus.

Not just any shark, though. This shark is easily over a hundred feet in length, floating in midair as if in water, tail and fins moving subtly. His skin, covered in a tracery of scars, is bleached-ivory white; the eyes, though, are the same dead, flat black of any shark's; he's not an albino, just white. It is entirely possible that the passage of time has simply leeched the colour out of him, if ever he were otherwise. His jaws work faintly as he gazes around himself, impassive. If this is the Heart of the Sea wizards speak of, it is a passing strange one; certainly it does not look like any of the many descriptions he has heard over the years, from various wizards attempting to convince him of its existence.

The giant billboard in its garish colours means nothing; he is a shark, after all, no-matter how intelligent, and human writing is incomprehensible to him. But he can... hear. For the first time, he hears something else wizards have long tried to make him understand, not so much a voice in the back of his mind as a sudden understanding that might have come from the air: Ask a question.

The Master Shark has never been one to ask or care for the opinions of others, but he's already died today, a small measure further strayed from the path is hardly that great a thing, considering.

'They say...' he uses the Speech when he speaks, which any who listen will hear as their own native tongue, 'that change is... healthy.'

The shark's tone is flat, almost emotionless save for the faint flavour of irony lurking under the words. 'I have lived ten thousand lifetimes of the lesser orders and never did I see any true change, until today. And now here I am. Out of my depth.' The monotone does not waver, nor does his expression, but there is the sense, somehow, in his speech, that if he had eyebrows, one would be slightly lifted.

'What think you, O... Nexus, if that is the name of this place.'

Standing
The program standing in the Nexus looks completely unfazed by his sudden appearance here, his expression impassive behind the black sunglasses. He turns his head slowly, looking around. Gears - metaphorical of course, his functions are much more complicated than simple gears - turn in his head.

As a precaution, he takes off his earpiece before asking his question. "Tell me, Multiverse, how much does one owe one's creator? Should one choose duty over . . . " He pauses to give a smug little half smirk, " . . . self?"

02

The young blonde woman looks around in shock. This is not the ranger's station. This is not even the forest outside. She's disheveled and dirty and deprived of sleep and rather certain she's officially gone insane.

"Where the hell am I?" (Her accent definitely pegs her as a Boston native, to those who would be familiar with such.) Another look around prompts another, more urgent question. "And where the hell's my brother?" Oops. Now she's about ready to panic.

Imperious
The young man who appears in the Nexus today is well dressed in expensive fabrics, a classy signet ring on his finger, and a cool, calculating look on his face. He takes in his surroundings at a glance, and casually slips a PINpoint into his pocket.

"Is it cowardice to run away from an abusive home?"

[Both] Couch
It's been a pretty long while since Yugi and Yami were last in the Nexus. Between school and... other happenings (which are the subject of Yugi's question today), they haven't been able to find the time to come in and visit. Now, however, things are in a bit of a lull, so here they are, looking a bit more... weathered than when they were last here.

Oh, Yami also has something new with him: a thin, straight-bladed sword with an Egyptian hilt design belted to his waist.

"So," Yugi says after a moment, "I had an interesting New Year's. Which brings me to my question: How would you react if you got press-ganged into saving the world with a group of complete strangers?"

((OOC: For them, it's still mid-January, which is when I should've posted this. >_> After I wrap up threads on this post they'll be accellerated to the current time of year.))

thinking about future
An important question has returned April to this area of the Nexus. She seems a little nervous, but generally happy. And she finds a place to sit down, before posing her question.

"This might sounds like a strange request... but I am looking for a doctor. Someone who is able to handle 'unique' patients. So does anyone here is a doctor, or knows of one?"

Néo seems to be nerving hirself to ask the requisite question, a process of several minutes' duration. Eventually, just as Pippi is opening her mouth to preempt her husband, Néo blurts it out:

"Is it outdoor sex season in your world? If so, is it public sex?"

There's a six-foot-plus-some young man, seated, and knitting busily.

"A question.  Okay, how about this---why do strangers keep telling me I'm a horrible person that should go die in a hole?"

Yes, there is some bitterness there.
Drunk
::Schuldig is sitting on the couch of his Nexus living room, eating a Cadbury Creme Egg in a way that'd be suggestive only if you have a perverted mind. Candy dishes on nearby tables featuring Peeps, chocolate eggs, jellybeans, Cadbury Creme Eggs, and chocolate-covered marshmallow bunnies.::

I'm celebrating St. Marks Down Day, a feast day for the patron saint of marked-down holiday candy, so I'm feeling generous. And I'm on a sugar high. What's bothering you, Nexus? I'll listen and offer my opinion on how to get through it.

Also, feel free to take some candy. I went overboard as usual. Have a seat and eat!

Coping Mechanism
Lichtenstein has a cigarette in hand, for a change. A very rare indulgence, but one he is enjoying thoroughly. He takes some time to enjoy it by himself before he even considers talking to people. Eventually he taps his cigarette on the ashtray, exhales slowly, gets momentarily distracted by the diffusion of smoke, and then goes to ask his question. "Do people have a compulsive need to openly pry into a person's life?"

A heartbeat passes before he adds, "And do you find it necessary to trust someone you're working with?"

Contemplation of the Facts
No books or journals today. Just a cup of coffee and a seat. The occasional flick of his wrist to practice wringing moisture out of the air which, when he does manage to get a drop, he freezes. It's a slow lesson.

In Dad's jacket skeptical
It's been a while since Clark visited the Nexus, not counting the wedding reception. Today is not quite as happy of an occasion, as indicated by his thoughtful frown.

"What's the best way to deal with an unexpected houseguest? Especially if they're family and you didn't know they existed until yesterday."

Néo arrives in a fetching ensemble of carpet slippers and hir PINpoint wristwatch, but shi immediately picks up a Convenient Nexus Blanket™ and drapes it around hirself so that all exciting body parts are covered, out of deference to the Nexus' sensibilities. Pippi is wearing slippers of her own and an apron. Both look tired but happy.

"To all other parents out there, new and otherwise: what's the one thing you're happiest to have your parents helping you out with? And what's the one thing you wish to god or goddess they'd told you sooner, or that you'd listened if they did tell you?"

Pippi adds, "And those of you trying to manage first-time parenthood without help from any of the baby's grandparents: how do you manage? We'd be run completely ragged if it weren't for Lolo-papa and Mûmû-mama."

EDIT: After a minute or two (or three, or seventeen or eighteen), Néo realizes shi forgot something. "Oh yeah, and those of you who aren't parents: are you excited by the thought of becoming parents, or scared by it, and why?"

A witch appears in the Nexus hub, looking more inconvenienced than surprised to be there. This isn't her first experience with interdimensional travel, and so far no one's shooting her; marking a noted improvement. Besides, something's been weighing on her mind for a while, and this seems like as good a place as any to get it off her chest.

"If you've been putting your trust in someone your whole life and you find out that they weren't who you thought they were..."

"Does that mean you just dismiss everything they taught you? There has to be some grain of truth there for you to have been fooled for so long." The witch tilts her head a mite.

"How do you find that truth in all the lies?"

resigned / upset / determined
Faye doesn't usually ask for help, but sometimes the situation calls for it. Especially when her usual tactic of doing whatever best suits her personally won't quite cut it. This is how she finds herself in the Nexus, all swishing coattails and scowls.

"Is it wrong to wish you didn't care about the people you're responsible for, when the situation would be better aided by you not giving a damn? When you're not supposed to give a damn in the first place?"

April and Clark are now married. After they attended a reception in Smallville, there was still another to attend. One in the Nexus. This one was set up in a dance club. With the music, drinks and food all set up for those who want some.

So many of their friends were able to show up in Smallville, but April hopes to see just as many here during the Nexus reception. At least during this one... secrets aren't necessary.

Who will be the first to congratulate the new couple?

I'm sorry?
When Morgana enters the Nexus this time around, it's with a flushed face, and a nervous look over her shoulder - as if she's afraid of being followed. She seems even more reluctant to turn back towards the Nexus afterward, looking toward the ground with an almost horrified fascination. After a long moment, she speaks.

"If... when one is upset... and angry, and.... desperate... is it... if one does something... unusual, does that..." She coughs a little. "How does one... know if they're... attracted.

To a woman?"

questions in the mist
Class warefare has been an ongoing popular phrase to toss around in recent times. However, it seems limited as it's largely only being used in one particular direction. The rich want their taxes cut while the not so rich they'd rather pay more taxes. The rich accuse class warfare to any who tell them this is wrong, or suggests that they need to pay more taxes as they can afford it.

What seems to be missed, the reversal, leads to my question: Isn't it also class warfare when the rich expect to be more exempt from paying taxes than those that don't have as much money as they? To have the not so rich and poor pay more than the rich, I mean.

((Ok, this is an OOC question about an LJ issue. I haven't contacted support (yet) because I'm pretty certain it's on my end and only occurs on this computer.

LJ's captcha doesn't show for me. Not just the image of the two words, but the whole thing. As far as I can tell images and java are not disabled. When I tried disabling java I got text for typing in the two words but still no image. I'm running Ubuntu Linux (Natty Narwhal version), and Firefox. I tried disabling ad-blockers and that didn't work either. From what I've read Ubuntu does not have a default on firewall and I haven't enabled one. I've tried telling Firefox not to use a proxy. So far nothing at all has worked. What could I be missing that's causing this? It's seriously starting to drive me nuts.))

Spare host, Issek
This fellow’s out of hiking gear and back in the Nexus, tweaking the settings on some kind of scanner. And occasionally tugging at the sleeves of his white lab coat, which he’s wearing over his more casual clothes but isn’t really comfortable in. He also has a question of his own this time.

“I am a neuroscientist,” he begins, “and I am curious about the possibilities of this place. Which of you would be interested in participating in a momentary scan of your nervous systems?”

Issek reflects on the peculiarities of humanoids for a moment, and then adds rather indifferently, “For science.”

For the Nexus: one dwarf female by the sign, wearing an impeccably clean pair of -pig tail fiber trousers- and an equally clean -alpaca wool shirt- and looking somewhat annoyed. "Are there any fortresses that actually employ soapmakers instead a' shoving them inta the magma plumbing?" she asks. "And does anyone have a decent barrel a' whip wine?"
13th-Dec-2011 06:43 am(no subject)
A partially open metal door appears in the Nexus by the sign, and a woman in a brownish platebody and chainskirt jumps backwards through it an instant later. She's got a spiked whip in one hand and in her other a large rectangular shield, painted orange and dented with three long diagonal claw-scratches, that she crouches behind like she expects a blow. Fire billows through the doorway and washes over the shield; most of it goes around her and dissipates without fuel, and what little goes over or under licks harmlessly at her winged and silvery helmet or armored red boots.

As soon as the flames vanish into the air the woman ducks behind the door, slams it shut with a full-body shove, and locks it with a key from a pouch on her belt. The door vanishes like it was never there the moment she takes her weight off it, and she looks around in surprise as she realizes she's not where she thought the door lead. "Oh goddammit," she mutters. "Again with the random kidnappings, I see."

She notices the sign, winces, and reads it, then loosely rolls up her whip and hooks it on her belt. "All right," she sighs, directing her words at nowhere in particular, "here's your question. What do you want me to do for you?"

It's asked in a tone of annoyed resignation, as by now she's used to being taken strange places by stranger people so her help can be demandedpolitely asked for, but she doesn't take her hand off the handle of her whip.
