I'd rather...
Zed grumbles something to himself as he sits on a couch, running a hand through his hair and then tapping his foot on the ground nervously. Finally seeming to have his thoughts in order, he relaxes, just a little.

“Okay, so it’s pronounced Cid but my name is spelled Zed. Where I’m from, Zed is a nickname for Zombie. Lucky me, eh?” Zed doesn’t seem particularly amused by this, but he’s trying to hide it through a fake grin. “Trust me, the jokes never ended about that one in school, and now I actually am a zombie. Zed the Zombie? How does a guy seriously introduce himself like that?!” Zed takes a breath, centering himself and calming down much more effectively. There, now he has a sincere grin, and he's sitting still. He resumes the normally calm nature that fits him.

“Some people have a name spelled one way, and said another. I know there are probably others here with names I can’t even pronounce, so, how the heck do you introduce yourself so that people say your name right? Or at least, how do you do damage control with the people who get it wrong? Any tips from people with 'normal' names that would help them get names right?”

"Generally speaking, I find verbal introductions do wonders."

That would be coming from the man with ridiculously pink hair. The one in the strange black cloak, standing just over there.
15th-Apr-2009 03:57 am (UTC)
"True, when people only hear what it is, it helps. Try getting called in roll call though, and suddenly everyone I knew was purposely mispronouncing my name, and then anyone new that met me, was introduced using the wrong name..." Zed shrugs. "I asked for them to stop but what can you do when it's the whole school?"

The pink hair doesn't seem to distract Zed much, but he is eying that cloak. Nice.
15th-Apr-2009 04:00 am (UTC)
"I've been lucky in that regard," he answers. "I haven't been in school for sometime."

This is likely because he kind of ceased to be a while back. And there's little need for it in his line of work.
15th-Apr-2009 04:06 am (UTC)
"I was in college until recently. Imagine my shock when a couple professors took roll call the first day. I almost left the room." Zed gives an ace grin though. "At least the Nexus gives me a chance to get the introduction bit right."

Ceasing to be? Zed's familiar with that, but definitely not in the same context of the phrasing.
15th-Apr-2009 04:13 am (UTC)
"The place is handy, in its way. And I can imagine my name would prove an inconvenience on a list of names as well."

Long story. Suffice it to say that he's rather thoroughly heartless (literally, even!) and no longer quite human.
15th-Apr-2009 04:23 am (UTC)
"Really?" Zed gives an expectant look.

Yay for members of the used-to-be-human club.
15th-Apr-2009 04:26 am (UTC)
"Call me Marluxia." He pronounces it 'Mar-loo-sha'. "I won't ask you to guess at the spelling; it's not what you'd expect."

Huzzah indeed.
15th-Apr-2009 04:33 am (UTC)
"I wouldn't even try. I know better." Zed nods and gives the name a go. "Marluxia." Well, at least phonetically he doesn't do too bad. "Nice to meet a kindred, hard-to-read name."
15th-Apr-2009 04:37 am (UTC)
And to think there almost wasn't a canon pronunciation of his name...

"A rarity, but one well worth it, sometimes." If only to watch people stumble over it.
15th-Apr-2009 04:41 am (UTC)
"Depends on the day, but yeah."
15th-Apr-2009 04:50 am (UTC)
"I always have to pronounce my name, even the short version."

Kurokage Himoto, but most people call me Kage." Pronounced KAH-gay.

"Unless they see my name first, and then they call me 'cage'. Do I look like I trap animals?"
15th-Apr-2009 05:00 am (UTC)
"All the trappers I know wear camouflage and call themselves 'Billy' or 'Joe' or some other mundane thing like that. Not Kage." Zed makes sure to pronounce the name as correctly as he can. It's the effort that counts some days. "Anything shorter for me and I become a letter of the English alphabet."
15th-Apr-2009 05:04 am (UTC)
"If you ask the Brits or Canadians, your name as spelled already is just a letter."

"And the only animals I'm interested in are my pets and my husband. Not likely to trap or cage any of them, yanno?"
15th-Apr-2009 05:13 am (UTC)
"Tell me about it. I grew up just south of the Canadian border..." Zed grumps for a moment, but only a moment. He smiles as Kage refers to his husband as an 'animal'.

"According to some people, winning someone's heart might be considered trapping, but I never saw that as a bad thing, honestly. Still wouldn't warrant the nick though."
15th-Apr-2009 05:19 am (UTC)
"I think my wife is the one who saw our relationship as a trap, at least at first. Hyou.. he's too easy-going, and he actually likes knowing he 'belongs' to someone. The silly cat."

"Difference in language, I guess. I have trouble pronouncing some of the names where I live now, too. Never could understand why the French have to put in twice as many letters as they actually pronounce.."
15th-Apr-2009 05:36 am (UTC)
"Cool. Well, as long as you found someone right for you, that's what counts."

"The ever-present language barrier. Yeah, when I had to pick a language for school I took one look at French and said 'I'm not touching that', and signed up for Latin. Dead languages: easier to butcher, but no one's around to care."
15th-Apr-2009 05:52 am (UTC)
Kage chuckles. "Well several someones, in my case, but yeah. We're a pretty tight unit."

"You know.. you'd think that, and then you come someplace like this, right?"

"My best friend from my world, and my best friend from here in the nexus both speak Latin as their native language.. Or.. a variant of it, anyway."
15th-Apr-2009 06:00 am (UTC)
"Dude, nice. Go you." Zed gives a genuine smile. Anyone that can find even one person that makes them happy is impressive to Zed, finding more than one someone, is downright amazing.

"I guess I need to watch myself and what I say a little bit more then. I'm still trying to keep all the little social niceties in mind, but occasionally I forget. Hey, who knows, I might actually get a chance to practice what I learned."
16th-Apr-2009 12:00 am (UTC)
"The nice thing about the nexus? What is social niceties for one group is an insult to another. You shouldn't worry about it too much, because no matter what you do, it's gonna piss someone off."

"For instance.. In my culture? If you saw someone you knew upset or in non-dangerous pain, you hugged them, cuddled them.. depending on how well you knew them you might even kiss them. But to most people? That's trying to get them into bed."

"I've learned not to just start hugging people, but somehow can't get the flirting under control as easily.."
15th-Apr-2009 05:20 am (UTC)
After spending a lot of time in Japan hearing people massacre my name, I tend to tell people they can call me "Schu" if "Schuldig" is a problem.
15th-Apr-2009 05:33 am (UTC)
Ironically Zed can get this name on his first try. Growing up in a community with a large second-generation German population helps.

"Schuldig. Yeah, I can see that one, definitely."
15th-Apr-2009 05:37 am (UTC)
::Lucky Zed!::

I had a lot of people turning the L into an R and trying to insert two or more new syllables into it. I learned to answer to that when I had to, but I never liked it.

But some people always have to pick at other people. If not at a name, they'll find something else. ::Schuldig is very familiar with this trait.::
15th-Apr-2009 05:44 am (UTC)
::German and Italian last names, Zed learned quickly not to mispronounce these things::

"Oh, the whole L versus R issue. A couple of my friends would talk about that. Man that had to get old after a while..."

"Yeah, I know the type. Some days I just wanted to hit them with a stick...or some other blunt object. Would have gotten me in trouble, but would have been satisfying." However, Zed's too much of a humanitarian to seriously consider violence as a means to an end in that sort of situation.
15th-Apr-2009 05:47 am (UTC)
Sometimes it's better to beat the crap out of people verbally. ::And in the Nexus the AVF doesn't do anything to prevent that.::
15th-Apr-2009 05:49 am (UTC)
"You make a very good point." Cue Zed's trouble-maker grin.
15th-Apr-2009 05:52 am (UTC)
Sometimes a public shaming works wonders too. ::Good times!:: Of course, if you make them look bad in front of their friends and cronies, you have to think of ways to protect yourself if they decide to get vengeful. Still, it passes the time!
15th-Apr-2009 06:02 am (UTC)
"Thankfully, right now the only people that could mispronounce my name are here, and they seem to get it right every shot, with thanks to verbal introductions. I get the feeling there's a reason no one uses name tags here."
15th-Apr-2009 06:07 am (UTC)
Probably. Personally, I think name tags take a lot of fun out of life.
15th-Apr-2009 06:08 am (UTC)
"They do, unless you abuse them in horrible ways. Then they just makes things more interesting."
15th-Apr-2009 06:12 am (UTC)
I tend to be wise-assed with mine.
15th-Apr-2009 06:17 am (UTC)
"Same here. Nothing says 'Hello my Name is:' like a hastily scribbled picture of something crude or random. Although, putting random equations from class notes seems to work just as effectively at stumping people."
15th-Apr-2009 09:51 am (UTC)
Jirarudan looks smug. As he does. "I find it a lot easier to introduce myself by occupation. Cuts down not only on having to sound it out, but it's far more important anyway."
15th-Apr-2009 12:41 pm (UTC)
"Sounds like an interesting and effective solution. What is your job?"
17th-Apr-2009 10:01 pm (UTC)
"Collector. Well, it was," he says with his normal detachment, "but I of course plan to get back into it as soon as possible."
17th-Apr-2009 10:44 pm (UTC)
"Collector?" Zed smiles broadly, very interested. "General goods or something specific?"
17th-Apr-2009 11:02 pm (UTC)
"Objects of great beauty. Art, gemstones, that sort of thing. The passion of their creators."
18th-Apr-2009 03:02 pm (UTC)
"Nice man. Sounds like you got an eye for that sort of thing."
26th-Apr-2009 07:52 am (UTC) - (sorry for being so late)
"I should certainly hope so. It's my life's work, after all."
16th-Apr-2009 03:01 pm (UTC)
"I don't know. I don't like my name. But it's easy to pronounce." Pause. "...You're a Zombie?"
16th-Apr-2009 03:24 pm (UTC)
Zed blinks. Ironically, that's the first time he's actually had that question posed to him. And by a kid. He's seen kids around the Nexus, but he hasn't really ever chatted with them.

"Um, yeah." He gives a shy grin as he shifts in his seat. "I'm not the kind of zombie you see in the movies, but technically I am one."
16th-Apr-2009 08:16 pm (UTC)
"I'm not allowed to watch movies." But that doesn't mean he hasn't snuck a couple late at night. He messes with the trinket around his neck.

"..So...no eating brains, then, or infecting the..human race with Zombie-virus stuff."
16th-Apr-2009 10:00 pm (UTC)
No movies? Well, at least the kid is less likely to have nightmares, but...seriously? Zed used to practically live at movie theaters.

"Righto." Although, how much he can speak for the other zombies like him, Zed isn't so sure. "I leave the humans alone, hopefully they leave me alone. I'm not a bad guy, I just...became a zombie." Zed shrugs. It's not like he asked to become undead, but the way some humans acted, it sure seemed like they thought so.

Zed smiles at the trinket. Mmm, shiny things. Weeks of unrestrained curiosity makes him interested to see it, but he keeps his hands to himself. The last thing he wants to do is upset the kid. They are having such a nice conversation after all.
16th-Apr-2009 11:25 pm (UTC)
He doesn't need the help with nightmares. Though, a cartoon or two would be nice. Even Disney.

"Wow. I didn't know zombies were, y'know, like that." He's the nicest zombie he'd ever met. Or heard of. Wait...wasn't Jesus technically a Zombie..?

Carl follows his eyes to the thing aroundd his neck. "..Kate gave it to me. She's nice to me."
17th-Apr-2009 02:18 am (UTC)
"Not all of 'em are like me, there are some of them that are like the 'normal' zombies, but there are enough of my kind so I'm not alone." Not alone, right Zed, whatever you say there buddy...

"Kate sounds like a nice person." Zed smiles.
