Dear Multiverse
ANY question will be answered. We care.
Hear me out.

She's got things on her mind. It's been getting tougher to ignore them, and Ami's the sort of person who likes to have someone listen to her. It makes the nexus a welcome place. Right now, she's seated comfortably on an elegant couch with a cup of tea and a sandwich set out in front of her while she pores over a few papers.

When she realizes she should ask a question to make her stay legitimate, Ami finally looks up and asks what she's really thinking about: "Duty, or family?"

"A difficult question indeed," a familiar voice muses. Its owner approaches from where he's been looking around the Nexus, being new here and all.

Ami's eyes widen. "Pharaun!"

How long had it been? Caught by surprise, she finds herself feeling a bit off-balance. She quickly recovers, as always, and offers him that trademark saucy smile.

"It's been awhile."

"There's a difference?"

...not everyone has your unique issues, Mordred, hi.
23rd-Jun-2009 05:44 pm (UTC)
On the other hand, at least she's taking his answer seriously. Ami nods.

"There can be. There's something important I need to do right now, and I also need to be with my mother." She can say that much, right?

"So I have to decide which one is first."

"My family sucks," Cordelia says easily. "Ran off to who knows where when the authorities found out they weren't paying their taxes. So of course, I would have to say duty."
23rd-Jun-2009 06:27 pm (UTC)
Right. Not the most helpful situation for comparison. Ami lets out a slightly impatient breath.

"It's different for me. I want to be there for her. But I don't want to let down everyone else, either."
23rd-Jun-2009 06:32 pm (UTC)
Duty, by leaps and bounds.

"I'd like to say family but sometimes the job comes first because it's more important."
23rd-Jun-2009 09:15 pm (UTC)
"Then, why is it more important?"

"I meant to say it becomes more important sometimes. As for why, well, I guess it depends on what you do."
23rd-Jun-2009 08:41 pm (UTC)
"Depends. You've got a duty to both, but if you signed on the dotted line somewhere that you're going to live up to expectations, you damn well better do so. If you can't balance them, maybe you should get the hell out of whatever you're doing."

Harvestman was pretty sure his experience didn't apply across the board, but she did ask an open question.

Mizuno Ami - it is Ami, with nothing about her to suggest Mercury unless he were to get enough to sense it in the blood - nods solemnly. He's right, and she knows it.

"But it's not a problem with balancing them," she says. "It's a problem because they can't be balanced in this case. So I have to decide."

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) he would have to be closer to her. Direct touch wouldn't be necessary, given that he already knew what her blood felt like, but his senses in the Nexus were more dulled than in his home world.

"Tough." It's not without sympathy. Although he can't really relate to that (fatherly pressure being what got him into the military, long ago) choice, it was still understandable. "Are they completely separate functions?"
24th-Jun-2009 08:45 am (UTC)
"Ultimately, duty. Both are of utmost importance. However, we all learn that the only then that supercedes the family is one's Place, one's duty to the State."

It only sounds the tiniest bit rehearsed.
24th-Jun-2009 09:04 am (UTC)
"And if someone chooses their family anyway, what then?" Ami asks. She looks directly at the new arrival, apparently either specifically familiar with the other's race, or accustomed to the Nexus enough to be used to a wide array of physical appearances.

((OOC: Usagi was right, I do play Time Lords too often...))

"Define 'duty'," the Doctor says thoughtfully from a nearby couch, also with a cup of tea. "And, well, for that matter, define 'family' as well. Do you mean simply blood-relatives, or those who are as close as family as well?"
24th-Jun-2009 11:32 pm (UTC)
She hadn't thought of it that way. She'd meant her mother, but Ami's mind flashes to Nephrite and especially to Jadeite, who still seems to hold regard for 'family' - and the shitennou as family. Maybe her duty to fight with them is the same as wanting to be with family.

"I meant a blood relative," she says, not divulging the rest of her thoughts. "And something important I have to do that means maybe I can't be with her even though she might need me."
25th-Jun-2009 12:30 am (UTC)
"Tricky question, all right." Yo, Ami-who-He-may-or-may-not-know, as the mun doesn't remember. "I suppose the duty one owes to family has to be weighed against personal duties accepted, even before love/reverence/ties of blood get counted in."

Hmm, maybe... "What circumstances, might I ask? And most of all, which do you feel to be in the right?"
25th-Jun-2009 12:42 am (UTC)
"What I feel is right?" Ami asks the question as if she hasn't really considered that angle. Of course, by asking the question at all, she's admitting there's that element to her choice; maybe the surprise is just in that someone's acting as if it's acceptable and legitimate.

She pauses, glancing away. "I want to be able to help my mother." There, that isn't so hard, right?
25th-Jun-2009 06:14 am (UTC)
Family always comes first.
25th-Jun-2009 06:19 am (UTC)
Why do you say so?
26th-Jun-2009 06:31 am (UTC)
"Why do you ask?"
26th-Jun-2009 06:33 am (UTC)
"Because I want to know."
26th-Jun-2009 06:35 am (UTC)
"Why? Is it that hard to choose?"
