Listening
Clark looks a little disturbed today, having come straight here from Seattle, and a new Zoner attack. He doesn't sit down in his usual spot, choosing instead to slowly pace around the room. "There's an old saying, 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'. Do you believe it?"

"Clark?" April is worried. They had planned to meet in the Nexus after seperating to deal with seperate issues. And her boyfriend looks stressed.

"I... sometimes. Yes. My dad was enemies with the Scoobies long before he became their friend. And sort of had to join sides with them."

He looks a little relieved to see her, at least. "At least that was something where everyone knew who everyone else was, right? No unexpected surprises?"

"Well they sure didn't trust him." April tilts her head. "What happened?"
4th-Jul-2011 03:55 am (UTC)
"I'm not entirely sure." He's still trying to figure out how to put it all together, how to express to her what happened in Seattle. "I found the Zoner. The crystal didn't work on him; he wasn't a phantom."

Chloe rolls her eyes a little, "of course not, just because you have one common goal, it doesn't make you BFFs, Clark."
4th-Jul-2011 04:43 am (UTC)
Clark's Chloe is a bit upset with him at the moment, so it doesn't take him long to figure out this isn't her. Hooray for alternates. "To be honest, I don't even know if we have a common goal besides 'get rid of Zoners.'"

The enemy of my enemy might become an ally, but I think "friend" is pushing it. Having a common enemy doesn't always give you a common purpose.
4th-Jul-2011 01:41 pm (UTC)
Clark nods a little in agreement. "That's what I'm thinking too. It could be a friend, with time, but it's not an automatic thing. Especially if the enemy's enemy is completely unknown."
5th-Jul-2011 04:28 am (UTC)
To some extent, trust has to be earned.

Here's another motto for you: "Keep your friends close but your enemies closer."
5th-Jul-2011 05:04 am (UTC)
Clark frowns a little. "I've heard that one too. One of my best friends turned out to be one of my greatest enemies."

"So do I. I mean, I'm hoping that my enemy's enemy is willing to be my friend, or at least an ally, but there's no real way to tell at this point."

"There are alien prisoners loose on my Earth. The kind that committed crimes so bad that my father locked them away in a different world for life. I have to find them and recapture them before they kill innocent people, if I can."

And here's a little puppet, with a little puppet-sized netbook computer, typing a little message that is displayed on both sides of the screen.

No, I do not. I have seen it to be untrue too often to believe. Sometimes, though, it is possible to be allies. And sometimes allies can become friends. But it is something that requires caution. It is not safe to simply trust because of having the same enemy. There are many who did not like the Nazis, but who would have still tried to destroy us if we were seen, ja?
4th-Jul-2011 05:37 pm (UTC)
Clark nods, both in greeting and in agreement. "Yeah, I can see that. It's especially hard to trust if you don't know who or what your enemy's enemy is. You have to get to know them first, or at least find out more."
4th-Jul-2011 08:09 pm (UTC)
And an enemy's enemy can be an enemy as well. I am sure there are religious groups that would have opposed Sutekh for being a demon. And would have followed by trying to throw us on the nearest bonfire.

And then there is the other end to things. Dr. Hess was not on the same side, once. And now Blade is one of us. It depends very much on the person.

"Welllllll sometimes. It goes both ways. Some folks believe 'the friend of my enemy is my enemy.' Maybe it'd be more appropriate to say 'the enemy of my enemy is my temporary ally'."
8th-Jul-2011 04:25 am (UTC)
"How temporary, that's the question." He does think that's a practical way of looking at it.
8th-Jul-2011 04:34 am (UTC)
"I think you can depend on it working long enough to get the job done. Or... if movies are anything to go by, right before the job is done. If you have the right kind of relationship, you can be all, 'Hey, dude, don't stab me in the back at the end of this, that's stupid'."
8th-Jul-2011 04:37 am (UTC)
"...funny you should put it quite like that. Though in my case it was more of... a partnership lasting all of thirty seconds before he flew off."
17th-Jul-2011 12:13 am (UTC)
Connor frowns a little, and Clark shouldn't be at all surprised his answer is along cautious lines. "No. They might be a temporary ally, but I still wouldn't turn my back on them."
17th-Jul-2011 12:18 am (UTC)
Clark isn't surprised indeed, and he's actually thinking along similar lines. "Yeah. It's... a lot harder when you don't know who it is either."
17th-Jul-2011 12:52 am (UTC)
He raises an eyebrow, slightly curious. "Have they made some kind of move to work with you?"
17th-Jul-2011 01:01 am (UTC)
"Sort of." Clark fidgets a little, not quite sure how to describe it. "I ran into a Zoner who was stronger than me. Was ready to kill me. Whoever this new guy is, killed him first. I didn't get the chance to talk to him, or get a good look at him."
